35 kilometers Walk Race

The 35 kilometres race walk is a relatively new event in international athletics, introduced to replace the former 50km walk. It is a true test of endurance, technical mastery, and mental resilience, taking athletes through over two and a half hours of intense, high-speed walking.

Held on road circuits, this event demands strict adherence to race walking form under constant judge scrutiny, while also requiring smart pacing, hydration, and energy management throughout the course.

The 35km race walk is now part of the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic program for both men and women.

Key Demands and Challenges:

  1. Sustaining high-level endurance over a prolonged period and distance.

  2. Maintaining flawless walking technique to avoid infractions.

  3. Managing hydration, nutrition, and energy intake mid-race.

  4. Coping with environmental conditions such as heat, wind, or rain.

Basic laws:

  1. Distance: 35 km, typically on a closed-loop road course.

  2. One foot must remain in contact with the ground at all times.

  3. The leading leg must be straight from initial contact until under the body.

  4. Athletes receive red cards for infractions; three from different judges lead to disqualification.

  5. Official hydration and nutrition stations are available along the route.
