High Jump Race

The high jump is a captivating field event in athletics where athletes attempt to leap over a horizontal bar without knocking it down. It demands explosive leg strength, impeccable technique, and aerial coordination.

Athletes approach the bar along a curved run-up and launch themselves using a single take-off foot. The most common technique used today is the “Fosbury Flop”, where the jumper goes over the bar with their back facing it, arching their body for a smooth clearance.

It’s a graceful yet powerful event, where precision, timing, and body control are key to success.

Key Demands and Challenges:

  1. Perfect timing for take-off from the curved approach.

  2. Full body control in flight to avoid touching or displacing the bar.

  3. High flexibility in the back and hips to arch over the bar.

  4. Mental focus to perform under pressure as heights increase.

Basic laws:

  1. Athletes have three attempts to clear each height.

  2. The bar is raised incrementally based on competition rules.

  3. A failed attempt occurs if the athlete knocks down the bar or doesn’t clear it.

  4. The winner is determined by the highest successful jump.

  5. In case of a tie, fewer failed attempts determine the winner; if still tied, a jump-off is held.
