The high jump is a captivating field event in athletics where athletes attempt to leap over a horizontal bar without knocking it down. It demands explosive leg strength, impeccable technique, and aerial coordination.
Athletes approach the bar along a curved run-up and launch themselves using a single take-off foot. The most common technique used today is the “Fosbury Flop”, where the jumper goes over the bar with their back facing it, arching their body for a smooth clearance.
It’s a graceful yet powerful event, where precision, timing, and body control are key to success.
Key Demands and Challenges:
-
Perfect timing for take-off from the curved approach.
-
Full body control in flight to avoid touching or displacing the bar.
-
High flexibility in the back and hips to arch over the bar.
-
Mental focus to perform under pressure as heights increase.
Basic laws:
-
Athletes have three attempts to clear each height.
-
The bar is raised incrementally based on competition rules.
-
A failed attempt occurs if the athlete knocks down the bar or doesn’t clear it.
-
The winner is determined by the highest successful jump.
-
In case of a tie, fewer failed attempts determine the winner; if still tied, a jump-off is held.
